Timtania Lasyana Graceli

In this educational journey, SMP Kristen Calvin students explored Jakarta's history and transformation over time. The activity aimed to introduce the city's evolution—from Jakarta Tempo Doeloe to Modern Jakarta—through visits to historical sites and urban landmarks.

1️⃣ Bahari Museum: Tracing the Legacy of Batavia

The journey began at the Maritime Museum, formerly a colonial-era spice warehouse. The building still retains its original Batavian walls, providing insights into how trade and maritime activities shaped Jakarta’s early development. Students learned about the city's role as a maritime trade hub and the lasting influence of colonialism.

2️⃣ Candra Naya Heritage Site: The Chinese Legacy in Jakarta

Next, students visited Candra Naya Heritage Site, once the residence of Khouw Kim An, the last Chinese Major of Batavia. This historical landmark showcases traditional Chinese architecture harmonized with modern elements. Amidst the serene ambiance and crystal-clear koi ponds, students gained a deeper understanding of the Chinese community’s cultural impact on Jakarta’s development.

3️⃣ Experiencing Public Transportation: TransJakarta to Bundaran HI

To immerse themselves in Jakarta’s vibrant city life, students boarded TransJakarta, the capital’s primary public transportation system, and headed to Bundaran HI. Surrounded by towering skyscrapers and bustling business districts, students observed how Jakarta has transformed into a modern metropolis.

4️⃣ GBK City Forest: Jakarta’s Green Oasis Amidst Urban Grandeur

The journey concluded with a visit to GBK City Forest, a green sanctuary in the heart of Jakarta. Here, students explored how the city balances rapid modernization with environmental sustainability, reflecting Jakarta’s efforts to become a greener, more livable city.

Journey Reflections

This insightful expedition not only provided an exciting experience but also deepened students’ understanding of how Jakarta continues to grow while preserving its rich history and culture. From heritage buildings to modern urban landscapes, they witnessed firsthand how cultural shifts, architecture, and societal changes have shaped the Jakarta we know today.
