To enrich cultural insight and deepen contextual learning, Grade 8 students of SMP Kristen Calvin took part in a study tour to Solo and Yogyakarta in May 2025. Over the course of four days and three nights, students not only explored historical sites but also experienced firsthand the living cultural values of Indonesian society.
Day One began with a visit to Kampung Batik Laweyan in Solo, where students observed the traditional batik-making process. They then admired the architecture and history of Pura Mangkunegaran, explored Indonesia’s first radio museum—Lokananta—and visited De Tjolomadoe Museum, rich in the industrial history of sugar production.
Day Two took students to the Gerabah Kasongan Pottery Village to witness the creativity of local clay artisans, followed by an appreciation of artistic masterpieces at the Affandi Museum. Their cultural adventure continued at Prambanan Temple, and the day concluded with a breathtaking Ramayana Ballet performance.
Day Three featured a visit to the Ulen Sentalu Museum for a deep dive into Javanese cultural history, a tour of the Yogyakarta Palace and Taman Sari, and a traditional Javanese dance class at Sanggar Seni Kinanti. The evening wrapped up with a stroll through the vibrant streets of Malioboro.
At each stop, students were encouraged not only to observe, but also to reflect, take notes, and appreciate the rich cultural diversity that defines the nation. This journey served as a meaningful platform for instilling a sense of responsibility and love for Indonesia through immersive experiences.
May this study tour be a lasting foundation for students as they journey through life—with hearts shaped and minds continually renewed.
